The Battle of Moisturizing Serums: Which One is Worth Your Money?

In the world of cosmetic chemistry, many brands replicate each other. It’s challenging to come up with something new when everyone uses the same ingredients, and cosmetics still cannot influence human metabolism.

A prime example is moisturizing serums. The most popular combination is hyaluronic acid and panthenol, with dozens of brands producing this product. How can you tell which one is worth buying? I’ve selected the six most popular ones; let’s take a look.

La Roche-Posay HYALU B5

A basic serum with a good composition: two types of hyaluronic acid – low molecular weight and high molecular weight, panthenol, and madecassoside. It provides moisturizing and soothing effects.

Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum

Perhaps the most overpriced serum. It contains hyaluronic acid salt, purslane extract, and lactobacillus ferment – all for $320.

Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Serum

One of the best (although this and the next two serums are more or less the same). Panthenol and hyaluronic acid are the primary ingredients, making up most of the formula! A highly minimalist composition (in a good way).

Timeless Skincare Vitamin B5 Serum

Similar composition to Medik8 – panthenol and hyaluronic acid at the forefront, with a short supporting ingredient list. It’s good and liquid (keep this in mind if you prefer gel-like, thick serums – this is not Timeless’ one).

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

Applause for the price-quality ratio. The formula includes low, medium, and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (and its polymer), followed by panthenol and emulsion stabilizers. A functional and affordable product.

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel

Unjustifiably “empty” – at this price, at least one active ingredient should have been listed before the preservatives.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right moisturizing serum can be daunting with so many similar options on the market. While each product has its strengths and weaknesses, it’s essential to consider your skin type, preferences, and budget. La Roche-Posay and Medik8 offer well-rounded formulas, whereas The Ordinary stands out for its excellent price-quality ratio. On the other hand, Barbara Sturm and SkinCeuticals may not justify their high prices. Ultimately, the best serum for you will be one that meets your skin’s specific needs and fits comfortably into your skincare routine.
