Review: A Mixed Experience with Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub

As someone who loves experimenting with hair care products, I was excited to try Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub. Known for their skincare, Drunk Elephant has a reputation for high-quality, effective products, and I was eager to see if this scalp scrub would live up to the hype. Unfortunately, my experience with this product was a bit of a rollercoaster. Let me walk you through it.

First Impressions

The packaging is typical Drunk Elephant: sleek, minimalist, and appealing. The scrub comes in a sturdy, easy-to-squeeze tube that’s user-friendly. The product claims to refine and volumize with a blend of 10% AHA/BHA and plant oils, which sounded perfect for my sometimes flaky scalp.

Key Ingredients and Benefits

The T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub is packed with powerful ingredients designed to exfoliate and nourish the scalp:

  • 10% AHA/BHA Blend: This combination of glycolic, tartaric, lactic, and citric acids (AHAs) with salicylic acid (BHA) works to dissolve dead skin cells and unclog pores, promoting a healthier scalp.
  • Plant Oils: Marula, mongongo, baobab, and maracuja oils provide hydration and antioxidant benefits, helping to soothe and nourish the scalp.
  • Cellulose Acetate: These tiny biodegradable beads provide gentle physical exfoliation, complementing the chemical exfoliants.

Application and Experience

Using the scrub was straightforward enough. I applied it directly to my dry scalp, massaging it in to ensure even coverage. The texture is gritty but not too abrasive, and it felt satisfying to work it into my scalp.

However, this is where the positives started to wane.

Scent: The scent of the scrub is quite strong and not particularly pleasant. It’s a bit medicinal. For someone who prefers light, refreshing scents, this was a downside.

Washing Off: The most challenging part of using the T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub was rinsing it out. Despite thorough rinsing, I found that the gritty particles were stubborn and difficult to wash out completely. This made the whole washing process much longer and more tedious than usual.

Results: After finally rinsing it out, my scalp did feel cleaner and less flaky. There was a noticeable improvement in how my scalp felt, but the process to get there was far from enjoyable.

Pluses and Minuses

Pluses:

  • Effective Exfoliation: The combination of chemical and physical exfoliants did a good job of clearing away dead skin and buildup.
  • Hydration: The plant oils left my scalp feeling moisturized and less irritated.

Minuses:

  • Scent: The strong, medicinal scent was off-putting and lingered longer than I liked.
  • Difficult to Rinse: The gritty particles were very challenging to wash out completely, making the process frustrating.
  • Overall Experience: The combination of the scent and difficulty in rinsing made the overall experience less than pleasurable.

Personal Insights

While the Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub did deliver on some of its promises, the negatives outweighed the positives for me. The scent and the hassle of washing out the product were significant drawbacks. Given the choice, I wouldn’t repurchase this product. There are other scalp scrubs on the market that offer similar benefits without the unpleasant scent and difficulty in rinsing.

Final Thoughts

Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub has its merits, especially in terms of its exfoliating and hydrating capabilities. However, the strong scent and challenging wash-off process make it a less appealing option for regular use. If you’re someone who doesn’t mind these factors, it might work well for you. But for me, the overall experience wasn’t pleasurable enough to justify a repurchase. I’ll be exploring other options that offer a more enjoyable and efficient scalp care routine.
