How I Change My Skincare Routine with the Arrival of Spring and Summer

As the calendar shifts from winter, the cold, wind, and other skin “enemies” gradually fade away. Our skin adapts, and it’s time for us to adjust our home skincare routine as well.

Acid and Retinol Break: Yes or No?

Acids and retinol increase sensitivity to ultraviolet light, so it’s generally recommended to exclude these actives in the summer. However, this is very individual and depends on your skin’s needs.

You can keep using acids and retinol, but you need to be very diligent about sun protection: it should be regular, applied in sufficient quantities, and reapplied timely.

Replacing Retinol and Acids

If you decide to give up these actives, exfoliation is still necessary. Enzyme powders are the hit of the season; they gently exfoliate and cleanse pores without increasing sun sensitivity.

The Best Active Ingredient for Spring and Summer: Niacinamide

It’s hard to imagine a routine without it because it addresses almost all of the skin’s needs. It regulates sebum production, acts as a powerful antioxidant, disinfects the skin and fights harmful bacteria, regulates melanin production, and increases the skin’s resistance to UV rays. In my spring-summer routine, there’s always a morning serum with niacinamide.

Sun Protection

It becomes a necessity, not a choice. I often skip the day cream and apply SPF directly over the niacinamide serum.

Supporting the Skin Barrier

Heat, sun, and more active interaction with the face can damage the skin barrier, so I always use barrier-repair serums and creams in the evening.

These are the simple rules that help adjust my skincare routine for the new season.
