Q: How to care for my skin when using retinoids or benzoyl peroxide?

For those familiar with the terms Roaccutane, Differin, Effezel, and Basiron.

One of the common side effects of using retinoids and benzoyl peroxide is dryness of the skin and mucous membranes. Many people who start using prescription anti-acne treatments notice these symptoms within the first few weeks. Naturally, they wonder: how can one establish a gentle and non-traumatic skincare routine? The basic steps are quite simple:

  1. Cleansing: Start with washing your face with warm water and a gentle cleanser. Gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel (do not rub – just pat, as rubbing can cause irritation). Ensure your skin is completely dry to prevent irritation from the subsequent application of retinoids or benzoyl peroxide.
  2. Application of Treatment: Open the tube of retinoids or benzoyl peroxide and squeeze out an amount about the size of a pea. Distribute the product over your cheeks, chin, forehead, and/or other areas with inflammation. Avoid applying it near your eyes and lips.
  3. Moisturizing: Allow the retinoids or benzoyl peroxide to absorb for a bit, then apply a moisturizing cream. If your skin is sensitive, you can apply your moisturizer before the treatment – go with what feels best for your skin.

Things to Avoid in Your Skincare Routine:

Products Containing Alcohol

  • Many moisturizing products contain simple alcohols (ethanol and isopropyl alcohol). Although these alcohols help create a light texture in cosmetics, they can also cause dryness and irritation. Check the ingredient list.

Fragranced Face Creams

  • Many people experience irritation from fragrances used to make moisturizers smell pleasant. When using retinoids or benzoyl peroxide, choose fragrance-free products to reduce the risk of skin irritation.

Products with Acids

  • This is straightforward: any exfoliating component that interacts with retinoids and/or benzoyl peroxide can potentially cause excessive skin peeling. Since retinoids themselves are keratolytic (exfoliating agents), it’s best not to pair them with cosmetic products containing acids – especially salicylic or glycolic acid.

By following these guidelines, you can create a skincare routine that helps mitigate the dryness and irritation often associated with retinoids and benzoyl peroxide, ensuring your skin remains healthy and comfortable.
