Some of the Most Heartbreaking Movies Ever Made

 

Award season is officially over with many of the best films of 2016 receiving top honors in various categories. However, as diverse as these movies were, several of them were outright depressing in tone. The harsh and tragic worlds presented on screen left viewers including myself thinking that no movie is bleaker than this. But unfortunately that is not the case, there are many movies that have showcased just how harrowing life can be. Here are five of the most depressing movies ever made.

 Lilya 4-Ever

This 2002 film directed by Lukas Moodysson is about a young girl who experiences some of the worst things life can deal to a person. Lilya is abandoned by her mother, raped by a group of guys she knows, and is forced to become a prostitute. The film ends on the only way it could with Lilya committing suicide.

Leaving Las Vegas

This film that showcases just how great an actor Nicolas Cage was. He stars asa man who decides to drink himself to death in Las Vegas. As he embarks on this suicidal journey, he meets Sera, a young prostitute, and develops a close relationship with her. The two find solace in each other even as tragedy strikes them both.

Precious

Lee Daniels’ 2009 film stars Gabourey Sidibe as an overweight teen who is constantly physically and sexually abused by her parents. Precious becomes pregnant by her father and finds help in a social worker who provides Precious with much-needed support. The film ends on a brighter note with Precious taking control over her life.

Revolutionary Road

This film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as a 1950’s married couple who are beginning to feel disillusioned with how their lives turned out. They both want to leave the tedious and conformist lifestyle they lead for a more creative one in Paris. However, the couple’s relationship begins to unravel as they try to change their lives.

 The Wrestler

Darren Aronofsky’s 2008 film stars Mickey Rourke as a professional wrestler who suffers a heart attack after a match. This causes him to reach out to his estranged daughter and to also start a romantic relationship with a stripper. However, when he misses an important dinner with his daughter, she tells him that she doesn’t want to see him again. Feeling worthless, the wrestler decides to partake in a hardcore wrestling match even as his heart begins to weaken on him.
